Arabic 2 (LL233)

Summary

Level
  • Students with prior knowledge of Arabic
  • Students who have completed A1 of the CEFR or GCSE level or Language Centre Arabic 1 or equivalent.
Main Objectives
  • To understand and communicate in familiar and routine situations, using frequently used expressions
  • To develop strategies for language learning
  • To achieve A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
Credits

This 30 CREDIT module is also available for 24 CREDITS.

Teaching and Learning

One weekly session for 21 weeks, organised as:

  • Two-hour face-to-face class on campus
  • One hour scheduled online session
  • Some independent study will also be set

If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online. 
Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore the minimum expected amount of study is 240 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required.

Assessment

Term 1: One interim test (10%)

Term 3: One reading/writing test (50%) + one speaking test (40%)

Course Description

The module aims at:

  • Reinforcing the basics of the Arabic language.
  • Improving students' communicative competences
  • Learning strategies towards more fluent reading, using authentic texts
  • Enhancing students' grammatical and syntactic structures to produce written pieces on a variety of topics.
  • Introducing students to some cultural aspects of the Arab World
  • Successful completion of Arabic 2 qualifies students to progress to Arabic 3

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Apply basic knowledge of grammar
  • Gain an insight into everyday life in the relevant countries
  • Apply strategies for understanding gist and short description
  • Interact about familiar topics and activities
  • Write simple texts giving background information and relating to areas of immediate need

Syllabus

The syllabus will include the following:

Topics

Including talking about yourself and others, describing your home, talking about work routine, sports and entertainment, travel and tourism, food and recipes, clothing and fashion, education, the environment, health, and arts.

Grammar

Including the use tenses, interrogative particles, some plural forms, negation, the use of cases (nominative, accusative, and genitive), verb patterns, and derivation of other parts of speech.
